Alex Gunning has a wide-ranging commercial practice with particular expertise in:

Energy and offshore construction

Alex is frequently instructed in large high-value, document-heavy disputes concerning oil and gas-related construction projects, energy-related construction projects and shipbuilding disputes. He has particular experience in disputes concerning contract terminations, delay, extension of time and defect disputes. Recent instructions have included a very high-value final account dispute on a hook-up project, multi-vessel shipbuilding cancellation disputes and disputes relating to EPC contracts in relation to power plants.

In addition, he has experience in a broader range of energy work, ranging from disputes arising out of seismic survey operations, drilling contracts and the storage of oil.

International arbitration and commercial litigation

Alex has considerable experience of disputes concerning commercial contracts and is instructed in a wide range of domestic and international arbitrations including under LCIA, LMAA, ICC, UNCITRAL, DIAC and trade association rules. He acts on arbitration appeals, applications to set aside awards, challenges to Tribunal jurisdiction and ancillary applications to Court in arbitration matters.

Insurance and reinsurance

Alex is instructed in an extensive and wide-ranging variety of insurance disputes in the courts and in arbitration concerning all types of insurance and reinsurance. He also commonly acts for insurers in subrogated claims.

As a junior, he acted in some of the principal claims in the market, including acting for Societe Generale in a US$500m action concerning the physical loss of gold (listed in The Lawyer's Top 20 cases of 2011) and Willis in the action brought by American Reliable and CNA arising from their broking of risks in the PA LMX market between 1995-1998.

Professional negligence

Alex maintains a significant professional negligence practice across the main professions particularly those involving lawyers, insurance brokers, accountants, engineers, surveyors, managing agents, ship managers, and management consultants. He usually acts for the insured defendants.

Other Areas

In addition to his specific experience above, Alex has general experience in most areas of commercial practice, including claims arising out of corporate acquisitions and in respect of the domestic and international sale of goods, together with experience of contract drafting.
