International arbitration and commercial litigation
Alex has considerable experience of disputes concerning commercial contracts and is instructed in a wide range of domestic and international arbitrations including under LCIA, LMAA, ICC, UNCITRAL, DIAC and trade association rules. He acts on arbitration appeals, applications to set aside awards, challenges to Tribunal jurisdiction and ancillary applications to Court in arbitration matters. Recent instructions have included representing a Dubai-based aircraft owner in an ad hoc arbitration concerning guaranteed payments under an aircraft leasing contract, representing a Chinese steel producer in a dispute concerning the delivery of coal from Australia, representing Kazakh investors in relation to an LCIA arbitration concerning the purchase of shares in a superyacht,
Shipbuilding, offshore construction and energy
Alex has wide experience of most of the common areas of dispute in offshore construction projects, including shipbuilding and rig-building contracts. He has a wide knowledge of the legal and technical aspects of ship design and construction and particular experience of issues arising from the termination of contracts, variation clauses, delay and extension of time provisions and defects claims.
In addition, he has considerable experience in the related field of energy work, ranging from disputes arising out of seismic survey operations, drilling contracts and the storage of oil.
Insurance and reinsuranceAlex is instructed in an extensive and wide-ranging variety of insurance disputes in the courts and in arbitration concerning all types of insurance and reinsurance.
He has acted in some of the principle claims in the market, including acting for Societe Generale in a US$500m action concerning the physical loss of gold (listed in The Lawyer's Top 20 cases of 2011) and Willis in the action brought by American Reliable and CNA arising from their broking of risks in the PA LMX market between 1995-1998 (listed in The Lawyer's Top 10 court battles of 2009)
In addition to contentious work he also has experience of drafting insurance wordings. For example, he was involved in the re-drafting of the RICS minimum standard terms of cover, and a design and construct insurance policy for a Lloyd's syndicate.
Alex maintains a significant professional negligence practice across the main professions particularly those involving lawyers, insurance brokers, accountants, engineers, surveyors, managing agents, ship managers, and management consultants. He usually acts for the insured defendants. He was instructed in the Barclays Bank mortgage fraud claims that was listed in The Lawyer's Top 20 cases of 2012.
