How to Apply

We are not a member of the Pupillage Gateway System. All applications for a 12 month pupillage must be made on our standard application form.

The application form asks you to provide information which will help us identify the very best applicants. Our application form gives you an opportunity to shine, and to persuade us that you have the potential to succeed at the commercial Bar. The form gives plenty of space to enable you to demonstrate that you meet our criteria by drawing on your own achievements and experiences (whether at University, or in a prior career, or from your own life experiences). It also enables us to assess your written advocacy skills, a vital skill for a commercial barrister. The form is your chance to show that you can produce clear, concise and persuasive written advocacy.

We expect to receive over 120 applications, and we will shortlist around 16 people for interview.

The application form must be received in chambers no later than 4pm on Friday, 10 January 2020 for pupillage commencing in October 2021. The form may be submitted online, or by email to or in hard copy marked for the attention of Ms Kate Guckian. Applications will not be accepted by fax.

Candidates’ application forms will be assessed on the basis of our selection criteria (see Who is Suitable). We will let candidates know by Wednesday, 22 January 2020 if they have been shortlisted for interview.

We will ask candidates who are shortlisted for interview to provide two references, at least one of which must be from an academic lawyer, unless it is impracticable to obtain such a reference. A copy of our standard form letter to referees is attached to the application form, which we ask candidates to deliver to their chosen referees. References should be provided to us as soon as possible, and in any event by 4pm on Friday, 31 January 2020.

Short-listed candidates will be invited to Chambers for a first round interview to be held on Monday 3 and Tuesday 4 February 2020. Some candidates will be invited for second round interviews on Friday, 7 February 2020, and offers to successful candidates will be made shortly thereafter.
